There I was on Facebook when my Fortune Cookie said ‘Your happiness is intertwined with your outlook on life’ and isn’t this statement so true.

This brings me to the topic of my article for today and that is the Law of Attraction. So what is the Law of Attraction? Well, Wikipedia describes it as ‘a metaphysical belief that ‘like attracts like’, that positive and negative thinking brings about positive and negative physical results.’ You may or may not have seen the film ‘The Secret’, but for me The Secret is a book and film that truly describes how the Law of Attraction works for the people interviewed by Rhonda Byrne; and in this it can teach each one of us that we create our own lives with every thought that we have every minute of every day. I can remember I’d like to say ‘the Australian guy’ who was interviewed as I can’t remember his name, saying that when he drives into the Mall (Shopping Centre) he always asks for a parking place near the door he wants to go through – it always works. What does he do? He attracts to him a parking place near the door he wants to use, by understanding how to think positively. This film highlighted my own experience as I always drive up to a roundabout and ask for ‘a gap in the traffic’. Even on the busiest roundabout you can think of in the centre of London, San Diego, Johannesburg, Sydney, and a few other cities I’ve been given a gap in a very short period of time. I just thank the Universe for my gap and take advantage of it.
Where your thoughts are negative thoughts, and research shows that the majority of people in this world thinking negatively as their ‘norm’, for example the typical ‘I can’t do that …’ type thought, you truly will not be able to do it. I can remember an incident years ago when my ex-husband and I joined with Australian friends in York, UK for a long week-end of exploring and fun. We were walking down one of the main streets in York towards the Cathedral when my friend (K) said ‘wow you always look at everything with such a positive light’. I’ve never forgotten these words, as they brought home to me that I do look at life positively. Quietly in the hotel later that evening I thought about what K had said and realised that since my spine-operation when I was in my mid-20’s, I’ve had an ‘I can do’ attitude, because those around me at the time of my operation didn’t want me to do anything in case I ‘hurt myself’. If I had accepted this position I would not have had the fulfilling life that I’ve had … and I know that this was triggered by my experience on returning from Kenya on one occasion in a wheel-chair – my thought then was ‘never again’.
This Abraham Lincoln quote ‘Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be’ is so true. If you get up in the morning and decide that today is going to be a good day, then it will be. If you get up in the morning and decide that today is going to be a bad day, then it will be. Wikipedia quotes the ‘I need more money’ – well if you always think that you need more money, you will always need more money. Whereas if you think ‘money comes to me when I need it’ then it will; and I’ve experienced this. In 2006 it was my parents Golden Wedding Anniversary and my family is spread out across the world, with my brother (and his family) and my parents living in NSW, Australia. Although at the time I was earning a very small sum of money each month – just enough to pay the bills and no more – I knew that the money I needed to get on a flight to Australia, buy the items we needed for a surprise party, and their anniversary present. I was offered a short term project, using my coaching and business leadership/management skills, which gave me the money I needed for the trip! J
So thinking about the way that your thoughts are generated – are they positive or are they negative? Do you find yourself thinking ‘I can’t do that’? or ‘I’ll try that’? Whichever you find yourself thinking will be true – if you think ‘I can’t do that’, then you won’t be able to – in fact you probably won’t even try. If you think ‘I’ll try that’ then even if you do not succeed you have looked at it positively and tried; but often you’ll find that you’ll succeed where you maybe had some doubts.
Og Mandino said ‘Search for the seed of good in every adversity’ and it’s so right. In everything that happens there will be some good. Going back to my spine operation – it wasn’t a simple decision to take and to some extent although I was in my mid-20’s my parents made my decision for me. In all our discussions about whether I should have an operation or whether I shouldn’t the comment about ‘I’m not getting back into a wheelchair’ was always there, and if this was one way that would ensure that I wouldn’t, I would go ahead with it. As you can imagine, I had many people around me saying ‘don’t do it’ … ‘it’s not a well-known operation and can go wrong’ … ‘you’ll be in a wheelchair from the time you get out of the operating theatre’. There were very few positive people around me and I was lucky that my parents saw the benefits of the operation rather than the slipped discs continuing throughout my life – so we said ‘yes’ and the booking was made. It was a scary time for me and I was going into the unknown, as I didn’t know anyone else who had had this particular operation; but I knew that the specialist I had been referred to by my Doctor in Malaŵi was fantastic. He had spent a lot of time with me during all the tests that were done, explained in words I could understand exactly what was happening and going to happen, answered all my questions, and given me time to fully understand the procedure. I had confidence in him. I can remember checking into the hospital – my mother was with me and my brother was due down from University in Scotland – and being shown to my room. Butterflies … yes! Concerns … obviously! My specialist appeared that evening and sat on the side of my bed and just talked through exactly what was going to happen – so I knew that I would come through this OK and that I would be able to walk, run, swim, dance, maybe ride a bike (this would truly depend on what sense of balance I would be left with), but I also knew that I could no longer ride a horse, wind-surf, water-ski, or do anything that meant jarring my spine! I would not be in a wheelchair!!! Although I had to go through a serious operation, to a great extent learn how to walk again, take time off work to build up the strength in my spine, the seed of good was ‘NO WHEELCHAIR’.
Last week you spent some time capturing your thoughts:
– Where they positive thoughts?
– Where they negative thoughts?
– Where they based on your dreams?
– When you reviewed your thoughts and you found those seemingly unachievable dreams – did you just discount them?
Roman Abramovich said ‘I’m realising my dream of owning a top football club. Some will doubt my motives, others will think I’m crazy.’ Mary Kay Ash said ‘Don’t limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve.’ So if you have decided that you can’t achieve that seemingly unachievable dream, what would you have to do to allow yourself to start to believe that you could achieve it?
I often see this when coaching students or clients of mine who would like to start their own business – they may start it and then something will happen or something will not happen that they expected to happen and then the ‘I can’t do it’ or ‘it doesn’t work’ approach comes through. All I ask is ‘if you are thinking that it doesn’t work, what will the Law of Attraction bring to you?’
Bob Dylan said ‘A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.’ So if you truly want to do what you want to do, or maybe achieve what seems to be an unachievable dream, who will be the only person who will stop you doing it? Yes, it will be you! I agree with what Henry Ford said, when he said ‘If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.’ From the perspective of the Law of Attraction if you think that you can, you are right and if you think that you can’t, you are right. Remember I explained my approach to having enough money is that it will come to me when I need it and so far I’ve been right – it has come when I’ve needed it. So going back to the thoughts that you have captured and I trust are still capturing, which ones did you cross off thinking ‘I can’t do that’ or ‘I can’t have that’? Go back and reassess them.
Lao Tzu said ‘The key to growth is the introduction of higher dimensions of consciousness into our awareness.’ So now is your opportunity to become more aware of your own thoughts … use your journal and look at the thoughts that you are having. Are they positive? or are they negative? If negative, take the opportunity to convert your thought into a positive one. So for the ‘I can’t run a business’ thought, you can now change that to ‘I can run a business and all I need to do is work through each step to running a successful business’.
The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
